Abandoned at Christmas

Abandoned at Christmas

One-year-old Okapi arrived at Together for Animals member charity Mayhew on Christmas Eve, after being found abandoned outside their veterinary clinic.

While we don’t know the individual circumstances that led to Okapi being left behind, this heartbreaking situation is, sadly, all too familiar for the teams across our member charities, who regularly step in to help animals when they need it most. Only days before Mayhew had two other kittens abandoned in their reception.

This sweet girl had a difficult start to life, and this was certainly not the Christmas she had hoped for. Her whole world changed overnight, leaving her understandably worried and anxious as she tried to make sense of her new surroundings.

After being carefully assessed by Mayhew’s veterinary team, Okapi was settled into a cosy cabin, thoughtfully set up to allow her to explore, hide and feel safe at her own pace. The team knew that patience, kindness and reassurance would be key in helping her begin to feel secure.

Before long, Okapi’s natural curiosity started to shine through. With the calming presence of the team, she began to venture over to say hello, enjoying gentle head scratches and moments of affection. By the start of the new year, Okapi was ready to take the next step and begin her search for a forever home.

With her long, stripey legs and inquisitive snout, it didn’t take long for Okapi to find a loving new home where she can feel safe, and show off her full, wonderful personality.
