Abandoned foal Slinky thrives

Abandoned foal Slinky thrives

When Slinky the cob foal was found abandoned and alone earlier this year, his chances of survival looked slim. But thanks to the expert care of our member charity World Horse Welfare, and the generosity of supporters like you, Slinky is now thriving.

A shocking discovery

Slinky was discovered by two World Horse Welfare Field Officers, huddled in a hedge, weak and unwell. At just six months old, he had been left behind after the other ponies at the site were taken away.

Rachel, one of the Field Officers, recalls: “He was very underweight, with terrible sunburn and discharge from both nostrils. We knew he urgently needed help. Thankfully, with the support of the RSPCA, Slinky was signed over to us and taken to our Penny Farm Rescue Centre for the care he desperately needed.”

Fighting back to health

At Penny Farm, tests revealed Slinky was suffering from equine influenza, although he thankfully tested clear for strangles – another highly infectious equine disease. He spent time in quarantine being nursed back to health by the dedicated team.

Once he recovered enough to leave isolation, Slinky was introduced to a companion pony for support, before joining a small herd where he could grow stronger and more confident.

A common – and heartbreaking – story

As shocking as it seems, abandoned foals and ponies are a sad reality. Every year, World Horse Welfare rescues and rehabilitates young horses, ponies, and donkeys who have been cruelly neglected or left to fend for themselves.

Slinky’s story is one of hope – but only made possible thanks to kind donations.
