From abandonment to friendship: Donkey Mia finds a new home
When young donkey Mia was abandoned while pregnant, her future looked uncertain. Thankfully, she was rescued and taken into the care of our member charity World Horse Welfare, at their Belwade Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre. With time, patience, and expert rehabilitation, Mia not only gave birth safely but has now found a loving new home – and a best friend for life.
A difficult start for Mia
Mia arrived at Belwade Farm in the summer after being abandoned alongside her companion Molly. Just a month later, she gave birth to a foal named Peanut. Understandably, Mia was wary of people, protective of her foal, and anxious around handling.
“With a lot of time, patience, and careful training, Mia’s relationship with people has completely transformed,” explains groom Jodie, who worked closely with her. “Seeing her go from being so apprehensive to enjoying a cuddle has been amazing. It’s been a very rewarding journey with Mia and I’m so happy that she’s found a loving home.”
A second chance at happiness
In July, Mia was rehomed by Alicia, who already had one World Horse Welfare rescue horse and was looking for a companion for her donkey Duffy. Having recently lost a donkey friend, Duffy was grieving – but everything changed when Mia arrived.
“Mia is adorable,” says Alicia. “When she and Duffy first met, they spent five minutes zooming around together and then had a bit of a chat – and that was it: best friends immediately. They’d both sadly lost their friend at a similar time, and out of that sadness, a wonderful friendship has blossomed.”
Thanks to the dedication of the team at Belwade Farm, Mia is now a gentle, affectionate donkey who loves attention. “She’s lovely to handle, very sweet, and she absolutely adores fuss,” Alicia adds.
