From Racetrack to Sofa: Cricket the Greyhound’s Journey to a Happy New Life

From Racetrack to Sofa: Cricket the Greyhound’s Journey to a Happy New Life

When a devastating racetrack injury ended his racing career, three-year-old greyhound Cricket faced an uncertain future. Thanks to the care of our member charity Blue Cross, this gentle dog has swapped the track for a much happier life as a beloved pet.

The harsh reality of greyhound racing injuries

Cricket arrived at Blue Cross in February after undergoing complex surgery to repair a fractured hock – the canine equivalent of a human ankle. Racing greyhounds are particularly vulnerable to this type of injury, as the anti-clockwise design of tracks places extreme pressure on their right back leg.

Sadly, his story is not unusual. Between 2017 and 2024, more than 35,000 greyhound injuries were recorded in the UK, and over 4,000 greyhounds lost their lives due to the racing industry.

Care and rehabilitation

With expert veterinary treatment, pain relief, and careful rehabilitation at the Blue Cross Burford rehoming centre in Oxfordshire, Cricket gradually regained his strength. Staff and volunteers not only helped him heal physically but also introduced him to home comforts he had never experienced before – from enjoying a sofa to joining big group dog walks.

Finding a loving home

After four months of recovery, Cricket’s patience was rewarded. He was adopted into a loving home where he is now cherished for his gentle personality, not his speed on the track.

Why greyhound racing must end

While Cricket is one of the lucky ones, thousands of greyhounds continue to suffer every year. That’s why Blue Cross is calling for an end to greyhound racing across the UK. With the Welsh Government announcing plans to phase out the industry, it is vital that England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland follow suit. You can find out more here.
