Kennelled racer rescued

Chilled-out Woody loves nothing more than lounging in his window-side bed, watching the world go by. But life as a cherished pet is a stark contrast to his past.
Once a racing greyhound, Woody was abandoned after suffering a severe leg injury on the track. He arrived at our member Blue Cross’ Southampton centre in 2019, unable to walk, one of thousands injured in British greyhound racing. Thankfully, his leg could be treated, but recovery was long and painful.
“For three months, Woody wore splints and was on strict rest,” says Tasha, Blue Cross Rehabilitation Trainer. “It was stressful for him, but he found comfort with the team.”
Foster care helped Woody heal, and his bright, affectionate nature soon shone through. After 200 days with Blue Cross, he found his forever home with the Webber family in 2020.
The moment Woody arrived, he settled in, claiming the sunniest spot on the sofa. Now eight, Woody enjoys bird-watching, lounging in the garden, and meeting people on walks—except in the rain! He’s even grown to enjoy the company of other dogs, thanks to regular outings with a dog walker.

His past injury occasionally flares up, but anti-inflammatories keep him comfortable. Meanwhile, his family has embraced a more active lifestyle.
Woody’s first trip to the beach was unforgettable—he excitedly dug a hole, surprising even himself! But he has his quirks—sand is fine, but pebble beaches? He insists on being carried. Back at home he is so loved – and the centre of attention.
Woody’s story proves that every greyhound deserves a loving home, far from the harsh world of racing.
