The Bond Between Humans and Animals

The Bond Between Humans and Animals

Many find calm in the company of animals. The bond between humans and animals is special – whether they’re dog, cat, or even horse lovers. But did you know it can improve health too?

Comfort and companionship

Many have pets who become part of the family. But they’re also a source of safety and comfort for owners. Just stroking an animal can make people calm and happier. This is down to the release of the “love” hormone, oxytocin. This comfort’s especially valuable for those who’s mental health needs a little support.

Owning a pet also creates a routine through giving owners responsibility and a reason to perform daily tasks.

Physical Health benefits

Besides boosting mood, animals improve our physical health too. Studies have shown that pet owners have lower blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and risk of heart disease than those without. This could be due to something as simple as walking the dog keeping owners active.

Another shows how children who grow up with pets are less likely to have allergies and asthma. Simply being around animals exposes them to different germs. This strengthens their immune system and helps fight off illnesses.

Pets as therapists

Animals are also recognised for their therapeutic roles. In fact, therapy animals visit hospitals, care homes and sometimes schools. Equine-assisted therapy involves horses and has shown great benefits for people with autism, PTSD and other health conditions.

Service animals also play a key role in helping those with disabilities. They assist with daily tasks and support, improving the lives and independence of their human partners.

Pets in Child Development

Pets also have their part to play in child development. They teach responsibility, empathy, and compassion. Caring for an animal means daily tasks and understanding the needs of another living being. This can give responsibility and routine – both beneficial for growing minds.

Building social connections

Dog owners often meet and talk to people during walks. This can lead to friendships that may have been missed otherwise. For older people, pets make great companions and give them a reason to stay active.

Emotional Support Animals

Emotional support animals are a comfort to those with mental health conditions. ESAs aren’t trained to perform specific tasks like service animals. But their presence alone can ease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. They can contribute to the emotional stability of their owners simply by giving a sense of security and being a companion.

The bond between humans and animals is special.

From day to day, our relationship with animals gives us comfort and stability. Whether through the love of a pet, the physical activity they encourage, or the social connections they create, animals enrich our lives.

At Together for Animals, we celebrate National Human-Animal Bond Awareness Day on July 28th and this extraordinary bond.
