Betty’s Story: Caring for a Lionhead Rabbit with Eye Problems

When the bond between rabbits Betty and Mabel sadly broke down, their owner made the compassionate decision to ask our member charity Blue Cross to help them each find new companions. Rabbits rely deeply on company, and without it they can quickly become lonely and depressed.

Mabel soon found a new friend and a loving home — but six‑year‑old lionhead Betty needed a little more time. Her ongoing health issues meant she required specialist assessment and extra care before she could start her own rehoming journey.

Sarah, Vet Coordinator at Blue Cross Hertfordshire, explains: “Betty arrived with a complex medical history. We knew she had a problem with one of her eyes, and her previous owner had been taking her to have her tear duct manually flushed because it kept getting blocked.”

As a lionhead — a brachycephalic, or flat‑faced, rabbit breed — Betty is more prone to dental misalignment. This can cause a range of issues, including eye problems, so the team arranged for her to travel to Blue Cross’ Victoria animal hospital in London for further investigation.

Sarah continues: “When rabbits like Betty have eye problems, it’s often caused by their teeth. But our vets couldn’t find anything wrong during examination or on X‑rays. They believe her tear duct is now completely blocked, possibly due to scarring from previous flushing. Because her quality of life is still really good, we don’t want to put her through further stressful procedures. We hope that regular eye cleaning — which she’s been very comfortable with — will manage her condition.”

Despite her medical needs, Betty has won over everyone she meets.

Aaron, Assistant Manager, describes her perfectly: “Betty is a great all‑rounder. She’s very friendly and easy‑going. She’s happy with a variety of people and spends time with different volunteers. She’s social, confident, and always out and about seeing what’s going on.”

Thanks to the dedication of the Blue Cross team — and the kindness of supporters like you — Betty has now moved into a new home where she can thrive. After everything she has faced, she finally has the chance to enjoy the companionship, comfort, and happiness she deserves.
