Helping a neglected horse in Morocco

Together for Animals member charity Working Animals International has recently changed its name from SPANA. However, the charity’s mission remains unchanged. With their new name and new look, they are aiming to make an even greater impact on the lives and welfare of working animals worldwide – at a time when their teams are working to meet increasing demand.
The ongoing climate crisis has made life incredibly challenging for working animals and their owners, as extreme weather increases and feed prices soar. In these circumstances, some owners believe that if they cannot feed their animals, they must release them to forage for themselves so, at the very least, they have a fighting chance
of survival.
In Chemaia, Morocco, farm owner Mohamed took in Tawil, one such neglected horse, and sought help at his local Working Animals International centre, where the team was ready to provide the treatment and support Tawil needed.

For decades, 72-year-old Mohamed has worked alongside the horses that support his farm. So, when he found Tawil in poor condition, undernourished and suffering from overgrown hooves he knew that immediate care was necessary for Tawil to live a healthy life and support his family.
At the centre, Working Animals International’s team provided a thorough assessment. They discovered Tawil had a high load of internal parasites. They administered a deworming treatment to help him recover.
A farrier also trimmed Tawil’s hooves, allowing him to move more comfortably. While Tawil received treatment, the team advised Mohamed about proper hydration, nutritious feed, balanced workloads and regular check-ups for his horse.
Working Animals International teams remain committed to ensuring working animals receive the essential care they depend on in ever more demanding conditions.
