Saving lives like Stig’s

Saving lives like Stig’s

For 140 years, Together for Animals member charity Mayhew has opened its doors to pets and their people. They offer care without judgment to those who need it most. Founded in 1886 as The Home for Starving and Deserted Cats, Mayhew has grown into a community lifeline supporting people in crisis, championing animal welfare, and helping to keep pets and families together. Their anniversary year celebrates their past, and honours the work they do with pets like Stig.

When a man rushed into Mayhew’s reception one day, he had a tiny surprise tucked inside his jumper – a kitten no more than a few weeks old. He said that he had found the little one alone by the side of the road, with no sign of his mum. The kitten’s front foot was badly hurt and bleeding. Before the team could gather many details, the man hurried away, leaving the kitten in their care.

Named Stig, the veterinary team gave the little kitten a full check and discovered his right foot had been very seriously injured. Two of his claws were missing and two of his tiny toes had been badly damaged. It was clear he needed urgent help.

Thanks to the kindness of our supporters, the veterinary team were able to operate on Stig. The team carefully reconstructed his injured paw so that he could heal and grow. Although the injury was severe, the operation gave Stig the chance to recover and live a full, happy life. Today, Stig is enjoying life in his loving forever home.

Stig’s story is a reminder of why support from people like you matters so much. Your generosity helps us be there for vulnerable animals when they have nowhere else to turn – providing urgent treatment, expert care, and the second chances they deserve.

Thank you for helping animals like Stig get back on their paws.
